My neice spent the day with us. The kids went swimming, played some video games, rode bikes & played in the hammock. We also ended up playing a card game & started a game of Pictionary.
Pictionary was quite fun. We must have played it for over an hour. Dinner brought the game to a screeching halt. When I got to the kitchen, I was shocked to see that it was 5:41. My neice needed to be dropped off to her mother at 7.
We ate a really quick dinner & still managed to get an extra half an hour in the pool.
As it turned out, we didn’t pull out of the garage until 6:59. Uh oh, we’re late. The entire drive into town the kids would proclaim the new time by the minute. “Seven-OH-twoooo.” In a tone of ‘we’re in trou-uh-buuulll.’ A drum roll followed each proclamation.
Thankfully, the meeting was running late. So, the boy & the girl started playing monkey-in-the-middle with another child that had been waiting outside for her guardian. My neice knew the little girl.
The 4 of us (after asking permission) went for ice cream. I could not leave the little girl behind, while we went off to have fun. As a child, I remember being left behind & how hurtful those experiences were.
I never stopped to consider the possible ramifications. What if we would have been in a car accident? What if she would have gotten hurt while under my supervision? That scares me a little.
As it turned out, the only thing that happened was fun. She was a sweet girl. We talked about Transformers. And, Snakes on a Plane, which I’ve never seen before. I heard more than enough about that movie from Miss T & my neice. *shock*
The kids talked about school & gum under the table. About Hannah Montana and somebody I can’t remember. They had ice cream in their hair & on their shirts and faces by the time we were done.
If the opportunity ever presents itself again, I hope to offer that kindness to a stranger again. I hope I follow my heart, instead of my head. I hope that the ‘What ifs’ do not rear their ugly head.
I hope Miss T enjoyed her time with us.
